Why I Switched to Natural Deodorants
As I previously mentioned in my non-toxic sunscreens review, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 2014. That changed how I looked at what I put on my skin. I was already somewhat aware of how harmful certain home, cleaning, and personal care products can be. But not to that extent. My endocrinologist told me to avoid certain ingredients, especially known endocrine disruptors. These are chemicals that mess with your hormone system, mimicing or blocking hormones and confusing your body’s natural balance.
That’s a big deal when your thyroid’s already struggling. The most common substances are Parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. Granted, most natural deodorants use many of the same ingredients. Unless it’s a baking soda-free deodorant like Ethique that uses alternatives such as Bamboo Powder, Zinc Oxide, and Magnesium Hydroxide. So, the Attitude baking soda is pretty straightforward.
- Maranta Arundinacea (Arrowroot) Root Powder: Arrowroot powder helps absorb moisture and gives the formula that silky texture you feel during application. My skin usually reacts to anything powdery or drying, but arrowroot’s super gentle—even soothing. No itching, no weird flaking. Just smooth, dry underarms that don’t feel stripped.
- Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda): Baking soda is amazing for neutralizing odor, but it’s also infamous for irritating. For me, that’s been true with other brands that have left me red and itchy in like two days. But surprisingly, Attitude’s formula didn’t irritate my skin at all. Maybe it’s the balance with magnesium and other soothing ingredients? Either way, it worked without the rash.
- White Tea Leaf Extract (Camellia Sinensis): White tea extract is packed with antioxidants, and in skincare, that usually means it’s calming and protective. So, what does attitude super leave smell like? When you first apply it, the Orange Leaves scent hits strong, bright citrus, a little eucalyptus, and super clean. It’s got a medium-to-strong fragrance that lingers for about 4–5 hours, then gradually fades into a softer, skin-level scent. It never turned sour or weird, even after sweating. But again, if you’re sensitive to fragrance, you might want to stick to the unscented version (I mentioned that earlier, too).
Texture & Application
Here’s where it gets real: the formula starts off creamy and smooth, especially when it’s fresh. It glides on nicely, doesn’t feel sticky, and absorbs fast. You don’t have to warm it up ike other aluminum-free deodorants. But—and it’s a big but—the texture changed a lot over time, especially during travel. After a few months of being carried around in my bag, exposed to heat, and just opened and closed constantly, the stick started to dry out and become crumbly.
