Over the years, my lips have been through more chapstick trials than I care to admit. After testing over 20 non-toxic chapstick brands (yep, I’m that person), I’ve narrowed down a shortlist of MVPs that don’t just meet my standards—they raise the bar.
And because I know it’s not all about my own pout, we brought in the big guns—Sofia’s little one, an adorable toddler with soft lips and big opinions. Together, we tested clean chapstick brands that are not only mom-approved but toddler-proof too.
Here’s what made the cut—and why.

Best Non-Toxic Chapstick Brands, at a Glance

- Best For Clean Chapstick For Men: Moon Valley Organics
- Best Chapstick For Cracked Lips: Beauty By Earth
- Best Chapstick For Dry Lips: EOS
- Best Chapstick With SPF: COOLA
Let me start by saying this: my lips have been through a lot. I’ll admit it—I’m not the best at drinking water (working on it, I swear), and the humid climate where I live only makes things worse. Whether it’s the scorching heat of summer or the chill of winter, my lips always seem to crack and beg for relief.
The lips are one of the most sensitive areas of the body, with thin skin that absorbs whatever you apply. That includes toxic ingredients too! Kids and toddlers are especially at risk since they’re more likely to lick their lips, ingesting whatever is in their chapstick.
Our Criteria for Clean Chapsticks
- Chemical-Free Formulas: We ditched parabens, synthetic fragrances, and petroleum derivatives. Why? Studies show these can irritate sensitive skin and may carry long-term health risks.
- Natural Ingredients Only: Non-negotiable ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil earned a spot for their unmatched ability to lock in moisture and soothe chapped lips.
- No sticky or waxy finishes: A chapstick should feel like a silky hug, not a sticky mess. We vetoed waxy finishes that drag or cake.
- Subtle, Natural Flavors: Subtle and natural were key—we’re talking vanilla bean, light mint, or unscented options. Sofia’s baby loved natural vanilla and berry flavors, while citrus ones didn’t get much love. It turns out that gentle, familiar scents make kids more likely to use toxin-free chapstick regularly!
- SPF: Because the sun doesn’t stop for winter, and your lips deserve protection year-round.
Our top clean chapstick picks are perfect for hydration-hungry adults like me (bonus points for added SPF) and little ones who deserve gentle, fun, and safe lip care. While personal faves are great, we also looked into certifications (think USDA Organic, EWG Verified) and read up on dermatological advice to ensure these products are truly top-notch.
Still not convinced? We’ve got receipts—links to studies and dermatologist-approved insights about why avoiding petroleum and parabens is key. Plus, I’ve included some newer non-toxic chapstick brands from 2024 that wowed us with innovative formulations.

The Toxic Ingredients in Most Conventional Chapsticks
Petrolatum
Petrolatum, or petroleum jelly, is a common ingredient in many chapsticks. It’s derived from crude oil and is often used because it creates a barrier on the lips to lock in moisture. Sounds great, right? Not so fast. The issue isn’t petrolatum itself—it’s the refining process. Improperly refined petrolatum can contain harmful impurities called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which have been flagged as potential carcinogens.
While regulatory bodies like Health Canada and the U.S. FDA consider petrolatum generally safe, concerns about contamination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)—potential carcinogens—persist. In Europe, cosmetics containing petrolatum must meet stricter standards, ensuring it is highly refined and free of PAHs.
If you’re shopping for clean chapstick, go for “USP-grade” or “pharmaceutical-grade” petrolatum, which is properly refined and safe.
Personally, I’d recommend investing in one of the many non-toxic chapstick brands skip petrolatum altogether and opt for natural alternatives like beeswax or shea butter.
Parabens
Parabens are preservatives that keep your chapstick from going bad quickly. However, they’ve raised eyebrows in recent years for mimicking estrogen in the body, which can potentially mess with hormonal balance. This concern isn’t just an adult-only problem. Kids and their small, developing systems are way more sensitive to parabens.
In this 2024 study that was published in the Science of The Total Environment (Volume 954), Parabens are described as a “double-edged sword” because they fuel respiratory, cardiac, reproductive, metabolic & carcinogenic issues. However, despite the proven side effects, new research found that the use of skin care products on children is a source of exposure to these chemicals.
Another eye-opening research, posted in June 2024 on ScienceDirect, explained the association between parabens exposure and neurodevelopment in children. More specifically, girls exhibited particularly worse neurodevelopmental performance.
The good news is that the EU’s Regulation 1223/2009 enforces strict criteria for the use of parabens, including mandatory safety assessments and labeling requirements. Additionally, some parabens are banned or restricted for specific populations, such as young children, due to concerns about their immature metabolic systems. More precisely, EU permits methyl- and ethylparabens in limited concentrations but restricts the use of longer-chain parabens like propylparaben due to higher risks
Other regulatory bodies FDA have established concentration limits while continuing to review emerging research.
If you’re after a clean, non-toxic chapstick, parabens should be on your no-go list. Look for products with natural preservatives like vitamin E instead.
Artificial Fragrances & Flavor
“Bubblegum Bliss” and “Vanilla Dream” may sound fun, but those fragrances and flavors might not be as sweet as they seem. Artificial scents and flavors often contain phthalates, which can interfere with hormone regulation. But, in some cases, the side effects might be immediate.
Anne Steinemann, Professor of Engineering at James Cook University, mentioned in her study on the ” International prevalence of fragrance sensitivity” that fragrances in workplaces and environments like hotel rooms are likely to cause an adverse reaction in about 32% of the sampled population. Even small doses of artificial flavors and fragrances in skincare, like chapsticks, can cause skin sensitization, irritant dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and aging of the skin.
Yet, companies aren’t required to disclose the specific chemicals because they are considered a “trade secret” under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. This is known as the “fragrance loophole.”
A clean chapstick will use essential oils or natural flavor extracts to keep things safe and sweet.
Chemical SPF
SPF is essential for lip care, but not all sun protection is created equal. Chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone are added to chapsticks for UV defense, but they’ve been found to absorb into the skin and may cause irritation or allergic reactions.
A new Stanford University study highlighted that Oxybenzone, in particular, has been found to harm corals by creating phototoxic compounds when exposed to sunlight. These compounds can lead to coral bleaching, deformities in coral larvae, and DNA damage. Notably, it can cause “sunlight toxicity” in corals, turning a protective UV-absorbing agent into a source of damage.
Beyond corals, oxybenzone can affect anemones and possibly other marine organisms by producing toxic byproducts that accumulate in their tissues.
For sustainable and safer sun protection, choose non-toxic chapsticks with mineral-based SPF ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These are not only effective but also safe for sensitive skin, including the delicate lips of toddlers and kids.
The Safest Ingredients to Look for in Non-Toxic Chapsticks
Beeswax
Beeswax is the “foundation” of all clean non-toxic chapsticks. It creates a natural barrier on your lips, sealing in moisture without suffocating your skin. Unlike petroleum-based ingredients, beeswax allows your lips to breathe while keeping out irritants like wind, cold, and pollution. Plus, it’s packed with natural antibacterial properties, making it a great choice for keeping your lips healthy in every season.
Shea Butter
Derived from the nut of the African shea tree, this rich butter is a hydration powerhouse. It’s loaded with fatty acids and vitamins that soothe dry, cracked lips and restore softness. Shea butter doesn’t just sit on your lips; it penetrates the skin to provide lasting hydration. A clean chapstick with shea butter will keep your pout feeling plump and nourished all day long.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is widely used in most natural skincare products, and it shines just as brightly in a non-toxic chapstick. It’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and deeply moisturizing, making it perfect for healing chapped or irritated lips. What’s more, because coconut oil has a very lightweight texture, it absorbs quickly, and its natural fatty acids create a silky-smooth finish. Whether you’re dealing with winter dryness or summer sunburn, coconut oil has your back (or lips).
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is basically a liquid wax that closely mimics your skin’s natural sebum. This makes it non-comedogenic, so it hydrates without clogging pores. For non-toxic chapstick, this means lightweight moisture that feels smooth, not sticky. Jojoba oil is also rich in vitamins and antioxidants.
Natural Vitamin E
Think of vitamin E as your lips’ personal bodyguard. It fights free radicals (those sneaky molecules that cause damage) while promoting healing and repair. When added to chapstick, vitamin E boosts hydration, reduces inflammation, and helps heal minor cracks and irritation. Plus, it’s a natural preservative, so it keeps your non-toxic chapstick fresh without the need for parabens or other synthetic chemicals.
Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide for Safer Sun Protection
If your lips are skipping SPF, you’re leaving them vulnerable to sunburn, aging, and even skin cancer. But chemical sunscreens? Hard pass. Clean chapsticks with mineral-based SPF ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide provide broad-spectrum protection without absorbing into your skin. They sit on the surface to deflect harmful UV rays, making them safe for everyone, including toddlers and kids. Bonus: These ingredients are reef-safe, so they’re as kind to the environment as they are to your lips.

How To Choose A Clean Chapstick For Your Lip Care Needs
For adults:
Long-Lasting Hydration for Dry Lips: If your lips are always thirsty, you need a chapstick that goes the distance. Look for moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, or coconut oil. These ingredients penetrate and nourish, leaving them soft and hydrated for hours. A clean, non-toxic chapstick with these ingredients is a game-changer, especially in dry or cold weather.
SPF for Outdoor Adventures: Your lips need sun protection just as much as your skin does. Since the skin on your lips is thinner, it’s even more vulnerable to sunburn and long-term damage. Choose a non-toxic chapstick with SPF (like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) to keep your lips safe from harmful UV rays during hikes, beach days, or even daily errands.
Anti-Aging Benefits: It’s not just your skin that shows signs of aging—your lips can lose volume and develop fine lines too. Clean chapsticks with antioxidant-rich ingredients like vitamin E and coconut oil can help combat free radical damage while keeping lips plump and youthful. Bonus points if your chapstick includes nourishing oils like rosehip or argan oil, which are known for their anti-aging properties.
For Kids
Safety of Ingredients (No Ingestion Risks): Let’s be real: kids lick their lips. A lot. That’s why non-toxic chapstick for kids is non-negotiable. Look for clean chapstick brands that use safe, food-grade ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil, and natural flavor extracts. Skip artificial flavors, fragrances, and preservatives—they’re unnecessary and potentially harmful.
Flavor and Scent Preferences to Encourage Use: Getting kids to use chapstick can feel like herding cats, but choosing the right flavors can help. Opt for non-toxic chapsticks in fun, natural flavors like strawberry, vanilla, or mint. Just make sure the flavors come from natural sources (like fruit extracts) rather than synthetic chemicals. If your child prefers unscented products, there are clean options for that too.
How to Identify Allergies or Sensitivities: Kids’ skin can be more sensitive than adults, so pay close attention to how their lips react to new chapsticks. Common culprits for irritation include synthetic dyes, fragrances, and even certain natural ingredients like essential oils. If your child develops redness, swelling, or itching, stop using the product immediately and look for a hypoallergenic, unscented non-toxic chapstick for toddlers or kids.
How to Read Non-Toxic Chapstick Labels Like a Pro
Key Terms to Understand
“Dermatologist Tested” vs. “Dermatologist Approved”
These phrases might sound reassuring, but they mean very different things.
- “Dermatologist Tested” simply means a dermatologist was involved in testing the product. It doesn’t guarantee safety, effectiveness, or that the dermatologist liked the product.
- “Dermatologist Approved” indicates a dermatologist has reviewed the product and endorses its use. While this carries more weight, it’s still worth checking the ingredient list to ensure it meets your personal standards for a clean chapstick.
Tip: Don’t rely on these terms alone—always check the label for non-toxic ingredients.
“Natural” vs. “Certified Organic”
Ah, the “natural” buzzword—it’s everywhere, but it doesn’t always mean what you think.
- “Natural” has no regulated definition in cosmetics, so it can be slapped on anything, even products with synthetic or toxic ingredients.
- “Certified Organic” is a regulated term. It guarantees that the product contains ingredients grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMOs. Look for certifications like USDA Organic to ensure you’re getting the real deal.
If you’re hunting for a truly clean, non-toxic chapstick, go for certified organic over vague “natural” claims.
Non-Toxic Certifications to Look For in Chapsticks
When a clean chapstick carries a certification, it’s a sign that it has been vetted for safety and sustainability. Here are some top labels to trust:
- USDA Organic: Ensures ingredients are 95% or more organic.
- EWG Verified: Indicates the product has been reviewed by the Environmental Working Group for ingredient safety.
- Leaping Bunny or Cruelty-Free: Confirms the product hasn’t been tested on animals.
Non-toxic chapstick brands often proudly display these certifications, making it easy to identify safer options for both adults and kids.
FAQs About Choosing and Using Clean Non-Toxic Chapstick
How Often Should I Apply Chapstick?
It depends on your lip care needs and the environment. For general hydration, it would be best to apply every few hours, especially if you’re in a dry or windy climate. If your lips are very dry or chapped, reapply more frequently, focusing on before bed when your lips can heal overnight.
But, remember that overusing chapstick can sometimes lead to dependence, where your lips feel dry without it. Stick to a few applications daily unless your lips are in extra need of care.
Can I Use the Same Chapstick for My Child?
In most cases, yes—but with caution. If your chapstick is a clean, non-toxic chapstick without harmful ingredients like artificial fragrances, parabens, or chemical sunscreens, it’s likely safe for kids. However, It’s best to choose a product specifically designed for children to minimize risks, especially since they may ingest small amounts by licking their lips. Non-toxic chapstick for toddlers often uses ultra-gentle, food-grade ingredients.
P.S. Avoid sharing chapsticks to prevent spreading germs, especially during cold and flu season.
What’s the Shelf Life of Natural Chapsticks?
Natural chapsticks generally have a shorter shelf life than synthetic ones because they lack artificial preservatives. Most natural chapsticks last 6 months to 1 year when stored in a cool, dry place. If the chapstick changes in texture, smell, or color, it’s time to toss it.
Is SPF in Chapstic Necessary Year-Round?
Yes! The skin on your lips is thinner and more vulnerable to UV damage, regardless of the season. In summer, you will protect against sunburn and harmful UV rays during outdoor activities. In winter, the snow reflects UV rays, making SPF just as crucial. So, adding SPF to your lip care routine isn’t just about avoiding burns—it’s about preventing long-term damage and keeping your lips healthy year-round.
How Do I Avoid Contamination with Multi-Use Chapsticks?
To keep your chapstick clean and safe to use:
- Hands off: If using a tub or tin, always apply with clean fingers or a clean applicator.
- Avoid sharing: Chapstick should be personal—sharing increases the risk of spreading bacteria or viruses.
- Cap it tightly: Close the chapstick securely after each use to keep out dirt, dust, and germs.
- Keep it clean: Wipe the surface of the chapstick or balm occasionally, especially if it’s been dropped or used during illness.

Hi,
I see you only reccomened one brand, Coola, for a spf lip balm.
Can you suggest other brands?
Hello:),
Yes, absolutely. We also tried the Earth Daughter SPF Lip Balm, the Joshua Tree Mountain, and the Burt’s Bees Island Getaway. These are all organic, lightweight, and non-sticky. Surely there are many more options online, but we didn’t get the chance to test them yet.
