Best Compostable Vacuum Seal Bags, at a Glance

If you’re trying to live a low-tox life, chances are you’ve already ditched plastic food containers and swapped cling wrap for beeswax wraps. But there’s one sneaky source of toxins and microplastics that often gets overlooked: vacuum sealer bags.

In 2024 alone, 220 million tons of plastic waste were generated, averaging 28 kg per person worldwide. That makes perfect sense if you consider that over 460 million metric tons of plastic are produced every year for use in a slew of applications. Breast milk storage bags, tea bags, gums, toothbrushes, water bottles, you name it! Alarmingly, projections indicate that plastic production could double by 2050, exacerbating environmental degradation. Each year, approximately 8 million tonnes of plastic waste escape into our oceans, threatening marine life and ecosystems.

Most of them are made from petroleum-based plastics that aren’t just bad for the planet. They can also leach chemicals into your food. Many plastic vacuum bags may contain BPA (bisphenol A), phthalates, or similar chemical compounds. These substances are known endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with your body’s natural hormone balance. This disruption has been linked to issues like hormonal imbalances, developmental problems in children, fertility issues, and increased risk of certain cancers.

The risk of leaching becomes even higher when these seemingly “non-toxic vacuum seal bags” are heated (like during sous vide cooking) or used in the freezer. This is where the plastic can degrade and release chemicals into your food. Even “BPA-free” products aren’t always a safe bet. Some contain BPS or BPF, similar compounds that may be just as harmful.

If you’re looking for a healthier way to keep food fresh and reduce your plastic footprint, this biodegradable vacuum seal bags guide is for you.

Are There Compostable Vacuum Seal Bags?

Yes, compostable vacuum seal bags are real. Instead of petroleum-based plastics, these bags are typically made from plant-based materials like PLA (polylactic acid), which is derived from renewable sources such as corn starch or sugarcane. These materials offer the same airtight performance you expect from traditional bags—minus the toxic load.

Unlike conventional plastic, which can linger in landfills and oceans for centuries, eco-friendly vacuum seal bags for food are designed to break down into natural elements like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass under the right composting conditions. That means less waste, lower emissions, and a smaller environmental footprint.

Some are certified for industrial composting, while others are safe for home composting. So it’s worth checking the fine print. Either way, these biodegradable vacuum seal bags for food offer a much cleaner end-of-life cycle than anything made from plastic.

Because they’re made without BPA, phthalates, or other petroleum-derived chemicals, plastic-free vacuum sealer bags are also a healthier choice for food storage. There’s no risk of hormone-disrupting toxins leaching into your meals, even when the bags are used in the freezer or heated at lower temperatures for things like sous vide cooking.

Are Compostable Bags the Same as Biodegradable Vacuum Seal Bags?

While the terms “compostable” and “biodegradable” are often used interchangeably, they don’t actually mean the same thing—especially when it comes to food-safe packaging.

Biodegradable simply means that a material can break down over time with the help of natural elements like bacteria, fungi, or heat. But there’s no clear timeline for how long that takes, and no guarantee the material will break down completely or safely. Some “biodegradable” plastics just break into smaller pieces (also known as microplastics), which are harmful to the environment and can end up in our food and water.

Compostable vacuum seal bags, on the other hand, must meet strict standards. They’re designed to fully decompose into non-toxic elements like water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter within a specific time frame under composting conditions. These materials won’t leave behind harmful residues or microplastics, making them a much safer choice for both people and the planet.

So, while all compostable items are biodegradable, not all biodegradable items are compostable. If you’re looking for truly safe, non-toxic food storage, plant-based vacuum seal bags are the way to go.

Best Non-Toxic and Compostable Vacuum Seal Bags in 2025

1. VestaEco Compostable Vacuum Seal Bags

compostable vacuum seal bags

Safe Materials: PLA Resin for industrial composting | Certifications: Passed ASTM specifications, Food safe by FDA and LFGB standards, BPI and TUV certified compostable | Uses: Sous vide, freezer storage, meal prep

I’ve used the entire VestaEco line (bags and rolls). Sadly, the rolls aren’t currently available on Amazon, so we’ll stick with the bags for now. These eco-friendly vacuum sealer bags are made from BPA-free PLA and decompose in about 12 weeks—but only in a commercial composting facility.

They sealed easily, held up well in the freezer, and worked fine in both my suction and chamber sealers.  I plan to use them for sous vide just like I did with the  VestaEco rolls earlier last year. The texture is a bit different than traditional bags, but not a dealbreaker.

Plus, they work with most brands of vacuum sealing machines which is a plus. The only con is that it the translucent which makes it harder to see the food.

2. Sustainapouch Compostable Vacuum Seal Rolls UK

plastic-free vacuum sealer bags

Safe Materials: Rice, potatoes, corn & a fossil fuel copolymer | Certifications: Certified OK home compostable, ABA Home Compost, BPI compostable | Uses: Sous Vide, freezer, refrigerator, and microwave-safe

These truly non-toxic vacuum sealer rolls won me over instantly. The company uses plants like rice, corn, potatoes, and Bio-based adhesives. And thus, these rolls are home-compostable and tough enough for sous vide cooking.

At 80 microns thick, they seal well and stay strong under heat, making them a solid choice for long cooks. For reference, it can withstand temperatures of 85°C for 12 hours. I like the high transparency—it’s easy to see what I’ve packed without labeling. While compost time varies at home, it’s good to know they’ll break down fully in commercial composting within six months. This roll format gives me flexibility in bag sizing, and I feel better using less plastic.

P.S. Sadly,  Sustainapouch is only available in the UK. You can order “overseas shipping” but you’d have to pay around £100, which is A LOT!

3. ECO SOUL Compostable Resealable Bags

best biodegradable vacuum seal bags

Safe Materials: PLA | Certifications:  TUV Austria, OK Compost Home, and BPI-certified | Uses: Food storage, freezer, not designed for vacuum sealing

Granted, these are not biodegradable vacuum seal bags for food – more of a snack bag that still deserves a place on our list. These Ecosoul resealable snack bags are made from plant-based materials and certified home compostable (TUV Austria, OK Compost, BPI); they break down without leaving a trace. I like that they’re free from harmful chemicals, so I feel confident storing snacks or produce in them. The zip seal works well, and the variety of sizes—snack to the gallon—means I can use them for everything from trail mix to marinating meat.

How to Choose the Right Eco-Friendly Vacuum Sealer Bags for You

Check the Composting Requirements

As I mentioned earlier, compostable vacuum seal bags are suitable for home composting, while others need the higher heat and controlled conditions of an industrial composting facility to break down properly.

  • If you compost at home, look for bags labeled “home compostable” (usually certified by OK Compost Home).
  • If your area offers commercial compost pickup, bags labeled “industrial compostable” can still be a great option—just check with your local facility.

Vacuum Sealer Compatibility

Vacuum sealers come in two main types: external (edge) sealers and chamber sealers. Some compostable bags only work with one type.

  • For everyday home use, most people have external vacuum sealers—so double-check that the bag you’re buying is compatible.
  • Chamber sealers are often used in professional kitchens and offer more flexibility, but not all compostable bags are designed for them.

Temperature Resistance

Planning to freeze your meals or cook sous vide? Make sure the non-toxic vacuum seal bags are rated for temperature durability.

  • Look for bags that can handle freezer temps without cracking or sous vide temps (up to 185°F or 85°C) without breaking down or releasing chemicals.
  • This ensures both performance and safety during cooking or storage.

Always Check the Third-Party Certifications

To avoid greenwashing and make sure you’re getting the real deal, look for certifications from trusted organizations:

  • BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) – verifies that the product meets industrial compostability standards.
  • TÜV Austria – provides certifications for both industrial and home composting (look for the OK Compost or OK Compost Home logos).
  • ASTM D6400 or EN 13432 – technical standards that confirm the material will fully break down in composting environments without leaving harmful residues.

FAQs About Using Biodegradable Vacuum Seal Bags For Food

Can I reuse vacuum sealer bags?

Yes, vacuum sealer bags can often be reused, especially if they’ve been used to store dry or non-greasy foods. After use, wash the bags thoroughly with warm soapy water, rinse well, and allow them to dry completely before the next use. However, you shouldn’t reuse bags that have stored raw meats, greasy foods, or fish due to potential contamination risks.

Are vacuum sealer bags safe for sous vide cooking?

Many plant-based vacuum seal bags are suitable for sous vide cooking. It’s essential to check the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure the bags can withstand the temperatures involved in sous vide cooking. Some bags are designed specifically for this purpose and are labeled accordingly.

Do vacuum sealer bags prevent freezer burn?

Yes, vacuum sealing is an effective method to prevent freezer burn. By removing air from the packaging, vacuum sealer bags minimize the exposure of food to cold, dry air, which is the primary cause of freezer burn. This helps maintain the food’s texture, flavor, and nutritional value during freezing.

How long does vacuum-sealed food last?

Vacuum sealing can significantly extend the shelf life of food. For example, vacuum-sealed meats can last 1–3 years in the freezer, compared to 6–12 months with conventional storage. In the refrigerator, vacuum-sealed foods typically last 1–2 weeks, depending on the type of food and storage conditions.

Are vacuum sealer bags microwave-safe?

Some plastic-free vacuum sealer bags are microwave-safe, but it’s crucial to check the manufacturer’s guidelines. If the bags are labeled as microwave-safe, they can be used to reheat food. Always ensure the bag is open or vented to allow steam to escape and prevent the bag from bursting.

Can I vacuum seal liquids or moist foods?

Yes, but it requires careful handling. For external vacuum sealers, it’s advisable to pre-freeze liquids or moist foods before sealing to prevent them from being drawn into the vacuum sealer. Chamber vacuum sealers are more suitable for sealing liquids directly, as they can handle the pressure without drawing liquids into the machine.

Are vacuum-sealed bags BPA-free?

Not always. While many modern vacuum sealer bags are “BPA-free,” that doesn’t automatically make them safe. Some manufacturers replace BPA with BPS or other similar chemicals that may carry similar health risks. To be sure you’re avoiding endocrine-disrupting plastics altogether, look for compostable vacuum seal bags or those specifically tested for non-toxicity beyond just being BPA-free.

Are vacuum seal bags healthy?

That depends on the materials. Traditional plastic vacuum seal bags can pose risks, especially when used for heating or freezing, due to the potential for chemical leaching (like BPA, phthalates, or BPS). However, compostable or certified non-toxic vacuum seal bags are a much healthier option for food storage, as they’re free from harmful additives and safer for long-term use.

Are cooking bags BPA-free?

Some are, but not all. Many sous vide or “boil-safe” cooking bags now claim to be BPA-free, but as with vacuum seal bags, that’s not the whole story. The safest choice is to use bags that are certified food-safe and free from BPA, phthalates, and other plasticizers. If you want to avoid the risks altogether, opt for heat-safe compostable vacuum seal bags that are specifically rated for cooking temperatures.
