That includes many popular peel-and-stick options that aren’t clearly labeled as PVC-free wallpaper. 

A 2024 clinical study looked at how switching to environmentally friendly wallpaper and flooring impacts indoor air quality and the symptoms of atopic dermatitis, which is a common skin condition often worsened by poor air quality.

Researchers started with a clear concern: materials like conventional wallpapers, adhesives, paints, and flooring release formaldehyde and other VOCs, which are known to irritate the skin and trigger allergic reactions. These chemicals are especially problematic for people like me, with sensitive skin, asthma, or eczema.

In the study, thirty people with atopic dermatitis had the wallpaper and flooring in their homes replaced with plant- or silica-based materials, completely free of formaldehyde and other common toxins.  

Within just two weeks of installing the non-toxic wallpaper and flooring, formaldehyde levels in the air dropped significantly. The health impact was clear: people who started with moderate to severe eczema saw a meaningful reduction in itching and skin inflammation after the swap.  

This study shows that choosing PVC-free, eco-friendly wallpaper isn’t just about sustainability—it can actually support better health. I tried one of her lighter-colored designs and will say this: because the fabric has about 95% opacity if you’re putting it over dark walls, those colors can peek through. Non-toxic removable wallpapers do NOT require a separate adhesive. But if you want to go for conventional options, you will also need to get paste or glue. I will list some great VOC wallpaper pastes below (just in case).

ROMAN ECO‑888 Adhesive/Primer

ROMAN ECO is technically compatible with just about everything—non-woven, paste-the-wall, unpasted—and it handled my project like a champ. The texture is thick, kind of like cornstarch paste, and it spreads easily without slumping or dripping everywhere.

What did I appreciate most? Zero VOCs and no smell—none. It’s certified by the NSF/ANSI 342 Sustainability Standard, meets California 01350 standards, and is generally just a super clean option for indoor use. If you’re sensitive to fumes or trying to keep your air quality top-notch, this is a great choice.

The application was pretty straightforward. I used a palette knife to spread the adhesive and squeeze out excess, then wiped down the edges with paper towels and water. You could definitely use a roller for faster coverage, but I liked the control I had with the knife.  

It offers great wet tack and extended open time, so I never felt rushed, and cleanup was easy. Bonus: it’s strippable, so when the time comes to redecorate, it should come off without tearing up your walls.

DIY Non-Toxic Wallpaper Adhesive Recipe   

Methylcellulose is a plant-based binder derived from cellulose (a natural polymer found in wood pulp and cotton). It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, odorless, and widely used in food, pharmaceuticals, and paper products. Because it doesn’t release VOCs or formaldehyde, it’s safe for indoor use—even in nurseries or small spaces.

You can make your own DIY paste using methylcellulose powder (often sold as wallpaper paste powder or bookbinding glue). Just mix it with water according to the package instructions, usually in a 1:20 ratio (powder to water), and let it thicken. It’s easy to apply, dries clear, and reversible—making it a great choice for non-toxic removable wallpaper or lightweight eco wallpaper.
