32 Plastic-Free Tea Bag Brands Without Microplastics in 2025

plastic free tea bags

This full list of plastic-free tea bag brands has been in the making for over six years. It all started in 2019 when I read that 11.6 billion microplastic particles and 3.1 billion nanoplastics end up in a single cup of tea due to the materials used in many conventional tea bags.

Research links microplastics to endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, and neurological issues. The tiny particles can enter our bodies and accumulate over time, potentially leading to long-term health problems.

So, I knew I had to take action and find tea bags without microplastics.

I tested dozens of non plastic tea bags, evaluating everything from materials, ingredients, and sustainability practices to, of course, flavor. Unfortunately, not all teas without microplastics made the cut. But the 32 brands that did are leading the way in offering safer, plastic-free tea options that don’t compromise on quality or taste.

Best Plastic-Free Tea Bag Brands in 2025

Believe it or not, your daily cup of tea could be serving up more than just antioxidants and warmth. It might also be loaded with billions of microplastic particles. Sadly, tea bags without microplastics were not on my radar till about 6 years ago.

This alarming discovery traces back to a study from McGill University in Canada. The research found that when a plastic tea bag is steeped at 95°C (203°F)—a typical brewing temperature—it releases approximately 11.6 billion microplastic particles and 3.1 billion even tinier nanoplastics into a single cup.

To put this into perspective, microplastics range in size from 100 nanometers to 5 millimeters—meaning some are so small they’re invisible to the naked eye. While plastic contamination has been detected in other food sources, like table salt, sugar, and rice, the amount of plastic found in a single cup of tea was measured to be thousands of times greater, totaling around 16 micrograms per cup.

This eye-opening research has fueled concerns over the health risks of ingesting microplastics and led many tea drinkers, like myself,  to seek out tea bags without plastic or switch to plastic-free loose tea. The good news? Zero waste tea options like corn starch tea bags, abacá fiber, and unbleached paper tea bags are now widely available, offering a cleaner, safer brew—without the plastic residue.

How Are Tea Bags Made

So, what are regular tea bags made of? You’d think it’s just paper, but most mainstream tea bags contain polypropylene. This is a type of plastic used to seal the bag and keep it from falling apart in hot water. Some brands even use nylon or PET. When you steep one of these plastic-lined tea bags in boiling water, it sheds billions of microplastics. One study found that a single tea bag can release over 11.6 billion microplastic particles into your cup. That’s a whole lot of plastic where it definitely shouldn’t be.

And it’s not just the bag itself. Ever wondered, “Are tea bag wrappers recyclable?” Unfortunately, many aren’t. The shiny, crinkly packaging often has a plastic coating, making it non-recyclable and non-compostable. So, after a single use, that wrapper is off to a landfill, where it will sit for hundreds of years.

Tea Bags with Microplastics Can Harm Your Health

plastic free tea bag brands

Scientists are increasingly focusing on the potential health risks of consuming microplastics from everyday items—including tea bags.

A 2023 study examined 45 different tea bag samples from brands in Persia and Germany. The analysis revealed a significant presence of microplastics and phthalates, raising concerns about long-term exposure to these contaminants.

Another study, released in March 2023 in the International Journal of Surgery, highlighted the wide-ranging health risks associated with microplastic ingestion. These risks include hormonal imbalances, reproductive toxicity, cancer concerns, metabolic disruptions, and even neurodevelopmental issues. The research emphasized that microplastics exposed to heat—such as those released from tea bags steeped in boiling water—may pose an even greater threat. Considering the sheer volume of tea consumed worldwide, this could mean a lifetime exposure to billions of microscopic plastic particles.

In November 2024, the Chemosphere Journal published a study analyzing three different empty tea bag samples purchased from Amazon, AliExpress, and a local supermarket. Each bag was made from different materials:

  • Sample 1: Nylon-6
  • Sample 2: Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
  • Sample 3: Cellulose

The findings were shocking. The PP-based tea bags released approximately 1.2 billion microplastic fragments per milliliter of tea, while the nylon-6 bags shed around 8.2 million nano-sized plastic particles per milliliter. Even the cellulose tea bags, often considered a more natural alternative, still released 135 million microscopic particles per milliliter.

Tea should be soothing, not a potential health hazard. That’s why more people are making the switch to plastic-free tea bags and even better—plastic-free loose tea.

The Environmental Impact of Plastic Tea Bags

Microplastics aren’t just a personal health concern—they’re a global environmental nightmare. These tiny particles have made their way into our oceans, soil, and even the air we breathe.

When plastic-containing tea bags are thrown away, they don’t fully decompose. Instead, they break down into—you guessed it—microplastics. These end up:

  • Polluting Our Waterways – Microplastics have been found in rivers, lakes, and even deep-sea trenches like the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the world’s ocean.
  • Harming Marine Life – Fish, whales, and other sea creatures mistake these particles for food, leading to toxic buildup in their bodies (which can eventually circle back to us in the food chain).
  • Contaminating Soil & Food – Microplastics don’t just stay in the water; they’re also found in agricultural soil, meaning they can end up in the fruits and vegetables we eat.

Now, you might be wondering, “Which tea bags do not contain plastic?” We’ve got you covered with tips on how to pick the best plastic-free tea bags without microplastics in 2025.

Which Tea Bags Are Plastic-Free?

By now, you probably agree that tea bags without plastic are the way to go. But if most traditional tea bags are laced with microplastics, which tea bags are plastic-free? The good news is that brands are finally stepping up, swapping out plastic for natural, biodegradable materials:

Corn Starch Tea Bags (PLA – Polylactic Acid)

One of the most popular plastic-free alternatives is corn starch tea bags. These are made from a bioplastic called PLA (Polylactic Acid), derived from cornstarch or sugarcane. The best part is that PLA tea bags look and feel like regular tea bags, but they’re 100% plant-based and biodegradable.

  • Pros: No microplastics, compostable (in industrial settings), and a great alternative to traditional plastic-sealed bags.
  • Cons: Not always home-compostable (some need specific conditions to break down).

Abacá (Banana Fiber) Tea Bags

Abacá, a fiber derived from a banana plant, is another superstar in the plastic-free tea bags movement. Many sustainable zero-waste tea brands use abacá because it’s strong, heat-resistant, and completely free from plastic or synthetic fibers.

  • Pros: Natural, compostable at home, and durable.
  • Cons: More expensive than plastic-based options.

Organic Cotton Tea Bags

For those looking for non-plastic tea bags that are 100% natural, organic cotton is a fantastic option. Some premium brands use unbleached organic cotton to create tea bags without microplastics—or you can DIY your own reusable plastic-free tea bags using a cotton sachet.

  • Reusable, breathable, and compostable.
  • Requires washing if reused, which adds a tiny bit of extra effort.

Wood Pulp & Hemp Tea Bags

Some brands mix wood pulp and hemp to create plastic-free tea bag options that are sturdy yet compostable. These materials come from renewable sources and don’t leach any microplastics into your tea.

  • Natural, biodegradable, and great for flavor retention.
  • May be slightly more delicate than plastic-lined tea bags.

The Benefits Of Tea Bags Without Microplastics

tea bags without microplastics

Ever noticed a weird aftertaste in your tea? That could be the result of microplastics leaching from your tea bag. With plastic-free tea bags, there’s nothing artificial interfering with the delicate taste of your brew. What’s more, some plastic-based tea bags release trace chemicals when steeped in hot water. Tea bags without plastic guarantee that what you’re drinking is 100% tea, nothing else.

That’s very important if you take into account that some research suggests microplastics can disrupt gut health. Tea is supposed to soothe your stomach, not irritate it—so choosing plastic-free tea makes sense.

It’s also evident that many plastic-free tea bag brands focus on high-quality, whole-leaf tea, which naturally tastes fresher and richer than the crushed-up tea dust found in conventional bags.

Another reason to give teas without microplastics a go is that you’ll cut down on unnecessary waste. As we mentioned earlier, when tea bags with plastic end up in the trash, they eventually break down into tiny plastic particles that pollute oceans and harm, sea creatures. Making the switch to zero-waste teas without microplastics helps protect marine ecosystems.

Many plastic-free tea bag brands use materials like corn starch tea bags, abacá, or hemp, which are biodegradable and home-compostable. That means your tea waste actually nourishes the earth instead of clogging up landfills.

A few readers messaged us with requests to find the best plastic free tea bags Australia has to offer. Nerada was our very first thought. Nerada is a well-established Australian tea brand known for its commitment to quality and sustainability. Their microplastic free tea bags use a filter paper made primarily from high-quality Manila hemp, offering strength and natural breathability for a better brew. However, this paper does contain a small amount (less than 2%) of food-grade synthetic fibers, included for durability and heat resistance. While not fully plastic-free, this blend aims to strike a balance between performance and environmental impact. Nerada remains a popular choice for those seeking a more natural, locally produced tea option.

How to Choose The Best Tea Bags Without Plastic

non plastic tea bags

Verify the Materials

When looking for non-plastic tea bags, check what they’re made of. The best plastic-free tea bags USA brands use natural, biodegradable materials instead of synthetic plastics.  Soilon (Corn Starch Tea Bags), Abacá (Banana Plant Fiber), Hemp & Wood Pulp, and Organic Cotton are all fantastic zero-waste options.

When shopping, check labels carefully—some tea brands claim to be plastic-free but still use hidden plastic in their sealants. If you see polypropylene, PET, or nylon in the ingredients list, steer clear.

Certifications to Prove That Your Tea Bags Are Actually Plastic-Free

Just because a company says that they offer tea bags without microplastics, it doesn’t mean they actually are. That’s where certifications come in. Look for these trust marks to make sure you’re getting the real deal:

  • Plastic-Free Trust Mark – This certification guarantees that the product contains zero petroleum-based plastic (not even hidden microplastics).
  • USDA Organic – Organic certification ensures that the tea is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs, making it healthier for you and the environment.
  • Fair Trade – This certification means ethical sourcing, fair wages for workers, and sustainable farming practices.
  • OK Compost/Home Compostable – If a tea bag is compostable, this certification proves that it won’t leave microplastics behind.

Compostability: Industrial vs. Home Composting (And Why It Matters)

One of the biggest perks of plastic-free tea bags is that they break down naturally, unlike traditional plastic-laced ones. But not all compostable tea bags are the same!

  • Home Compostable – These tea bags can fully break down in your backyard compost bin, usually within a few months. Look for tea bags made from abacá, hemp, or unbleached paper if you want a home-compostable option.
  • Industrial Compostable – Some corn starch tea bags (PLA-based tea bags) require specialized industrial composting facilities to break down properly. While still better than plastic, they won’t decompose in a home compost bin.

If you’re serious about reducing waste, go for tea bags without plastic that are home-compostable—that way, you know they’ll return to the earth without leaving behind microplastics.

How Do I Know If My Teabags Are Plastic?

You have a favorite brand and want to check if they actually offer plastic free tea bags? Here are some easy tips to help you:

Check the Packaging and Label: Look for clear labeling. Brands that offer tea bags without microplastics usually advertise it front and center. Phrases to look for include:

  • “Plastic-free tea bags”
  • “100% biodegradable”
  • “Compostable sachets”
  • “Made from natural fibers” like paper, cotton, or cornstarch-based materials

If the packaging doesn’t say plastic-free, assume it probably contains plastic.

Feel the Texture: Traditional paper tea bags have a soft, dry, slightly rough texture. Plastic or plastic-blended tea bags often feel silky, slippery, or mesh-like, especially the pyramid-style bags. If your teabag looks like fine mesh or feels synthetic, it’s likely made from nylon or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Do the Burn Test: While not ideal for everyone, some people cut open a used tea bag and carefully burn a small corner. Plastic-free tea bags won’t emit an artificial scent. So, if it smells like burning plastic or melts rather than turning to ash, it’s likely plastic-based. Only try this safely and in a well-ventilated area.

Switch to Loose Leaf or Known Microplastic-Free Tea Bags Brands: If you want to play it completely safe, choose loose leaf tea and brew it using a stainless steel or ceramic infuser. Or, stick with tea bags without plastic that are transparent about their packaging. Here are a few of the best tea bags without microplastics:

How to Transition to Plastic-Free Tea

So, you’ve decided to ditch tea bags with plastic—great choice! But how do you actually make the transition? Luckily, it’s easier than you think. Whether you want to explore plastic-free loose tea, switch to non-plastic tea bags, or even create your own blends, I’ve got you covered.

Give Loose Leaf Tea Options a try

If you want to go 100% plastic-free, loose leaf tea no plastic is hands down the best option. Not only does it eliminate tea bags without microplastics, but it also:

  • Tastes better – Loose leaf tea is typically higher quality than bagged tea, giving you a fresher, more flavorful cup.
  • Has less waste – No tea bags = no unnecessary packaging.
  • Gives you more control – Choose how strong you want your brew and mix flavors freely.

How to Brew Loose Leaf Tea (Without the Mess!)

Switching to plastic-free loose tea doesn’t mean you have to deal with floating tea leaves in your cup. Here are some sustainable infuser options:

  • Stainless Steel Tea Infuser – A reusable, metal mesh strainer that lets you steep tea effortlessly.
  • Reusable Cotton Tea Bags – If you still love the feel of tea bags, opt for organic cotton ones that you can wash and reuse.
  • French Press – Yep, the same tool you use for coffee works great for brewing loose leaf tea!
  • Teapot with Built-In Strainer – Many teapots come with removable strainers, making it easy to enjoy teas without microplastics.

If you’re new to loose leaf tea, start with a simple black, green, or herbal tea and experiment from there.

DIY Tea Blends

One of the best things about switching to plastic-free tea without microplastics is that you can make your own blends! Instead of relying on pre-packaged teas (which may still have hidden plastic), buy bulk organic herbs and spices and create customized tea blends.

How to Make Your Own Tea Blends

  1. Start with a base – Choose black, green, white, or rooibos tea, or go caffeine-free with chamomile, peppermint, or hibiscus.
  2. Add flavors – Try lavender for relaxation, ginger for warmth, cinnamon for spice, or citrus peels for a zesty kick.
  3. Experiment – Mix and match ingredients until you find your perfect blend!

Where to Find Sustainable Bulk Herbs & Loose Leaf Tea

  • Farmers’ markets

Faqs About Tea Bags Without Plastic

Which tea bags do not contain plastic?

Several tea brands such as Pukka, Teapigs, Clipper, and Bigelow Tea offer plastic-free tea bags made from natural, biodegradable materials like unbleached paper, cornstarch, or plant-based fibers. They also use eco-friendly packaging and avoid polypropylene, a plastic commonly used to seal conventional tea bags.

Which tea bags are plastic-free in the UK?

If you’re in the UK and looking for plastic-free tea bags, NEMI, Abel & Cole, Brew Tea Company, and Good & Proper are excellent choices. These brands use fully compostable materials, and, in most cases, plastic-free packaging.

Are Lipton tea bags plastic-free?

Most Lipton tea bags contain plastic, as they are sealed with polypropylene. However, the Cold Brew Tea Bags are a safer, plastic-free option. If you want to avoid plastic altogether, it’s best to check the packaging or opt for brands that explicitly state they are plastic-free.

Are Lidl tea bags plastic-free?

Lidl has made efforts to reduce plastic in its tea bags, and some of its own-brand teas now use biodegradable, plant-based alternatives. However, not all Lidl tea bags are plastic-free. If you’re shopping at Lidl, check the packaging for terms like “biodegradable,” “compostable,” or “plastic-free” to ensure you’re choosing an eco-friendly option.

Are Bigelow tea bags compostable?

Bigelow tea bags are not fully compostable. While the tea bags themselves are made from natural fibers, they are sealed with polypropylene, a plastic that does not break down in compost. This means they are not suitable for home composting and may contribute to microplastic pollution.

Are Tazo tea bags compostable?

No, Tazo tea bags contain microplastics and are not fully compostable. Many of their tea bags are made from a plastic-based material, which means they do not break down naturally.

Are Stash tea bags compostable?

Stash tea bags are not fully compostable because they contain polypropylene to seal the bags. While they use some natural fibers, the presence of plastic means they should not be placed in compost bins.

What is the safest brand of tea?

The safest brands of tea prioritize organic ingredients, plastic-free packaging, and transparency in sourcing. Brands like Pukka and Clipper are widely trusted for their organic blends and biodegradable, plastic-free tea bags. For those in Australia, Higher Living offers some of the best non-plastic tea bags, while in the UK, Good & Proper is a top choice for plastic-free, sustainable packaging.

Final Thoughts on Plastic-Free Tea Bags Without Microplastics

At the end of the day (or teatime), what’s in your cup matters. Many conventional tea bags contain microplastics—tiny plastic particles that not only end up in your tea but also in the environment. Studies have found that some tea bags release billions of microplastic and nanoplastic particles per cup, which can accumulate in your body and disrupt ecosystems when washed down the drain.

Choosing plastic-free tea bags isn’t just about better tea—it’s about better health and a healthier planet. By opting for zero waste tea bags without microplastics from brands that use compostable, biodegradable, or natural fiber tea bags, you reduce plastic exposure and prevent unnecessary waste from piling up in landfills and waterways. Plus, tea just tastes better when it’s steeped without synthetic materials.
